What we did

We asked about the cost and time frame for designing a 20 page site from scratch or redesigning an existing site, including the # of design concepts and whether we could get both Flash and non Flash versions in the same package. We asked about design standards and search engine optimization, as well as the availability of hosting. Finally, we asked about the best way to communicate with the offshore web design company and the desired payment arrangements. Here's what we found out.



Offshore Web Design: RoWeb

RoWeb Development, based in Romania, has 12 programmers and a site that is easy to navigate with information about the services they offer easily available. Roweb was quick to supply information about their business, but were unable to supply information about the timescale for designing a 20 page site. They explained that this was because a simple site could be done in a week, but a site with lots of backend programming and databases could take months.

New customers have to pay a 50% deposit up front for design services. RoWeb does not provide sample designs, relying on discussions with clients to get the job right first time. But the company suggests visiting Template Monster or another templating site to see designs that the client might like as a starting point.

RoWeb says its design standards are Web 2.0 and it communicates by email and Skype. The company also offers SEO services, including link building, online marketing, on site and off site optimization and much more. There is also an online consultation, charged per hour or half hour - and you can get answers to SEO questions by email.



Offshore Web Design: Move Your Web

MoveYourWeb is based in Minsk, Belarus. This company said it would take two weeks to design a 20 page site, including coding. The process starts with the assignment of a project manager who sits down with you to take details and plan the site. You get up to three design mock ups to choose from before making a final decision. The estimated cost of the design was $1,000, with 30% due as deposit and the rest due after the client has accepted the finished web site. The cost is the same for a Flash version, which would put the cost of a site at $2,000 for both versions. The company communicates by IM or email. While it does not provide hosting, the company has links to web hosts and can recommend hosting companies. There are 100 programmers with the company.

SEO is a service that the company provides and it was able to give examples of several companies for which it had achieved top ten rankings for particular keywords. The SEO service is charged at $1,150 a month, for which you get your own consultant who undertakes a number of optimization tasks.
